Spring Season Kick-off!/New General Meeting Location


The GSMAS invites members and the general public  to the first meeting of the 2012 season on  Tuesday, April 10th, at 6:30pm.  Guest speaker Janet Manning will be presenting "Spring Native Wildflowers."   Janet is the Director of the Corneille Bryan Native Garden at Lake Junaluska, NC.


New Location:   We are pleased to announce our new general meeting home at the Paul Kern Youth Center (near the rest rooms/swimming pool) at Lake Junaluska Retreat & Conference Center. 


 Lake Junaluska is the  "winter birding hot spot"  of Western North Carolina, and is also a North Carolina Birding Trail birding site in the Haywood County Group of the Mountain Trail Guide.

 

 Lake Junaluska  is easily  accessible from I-40, 23/74 or 276. Just off Hwy 19/Dellwood Road turn onto N.Lakeshore; at the "T"  bear right, then  Paul Kern Youth Center is about 1/4 mile on the corner just past the playground.  You can park alongside or turn right on Memory Street and park near the public restrooms for easy access. Tuesday, April 10th, General Meeting, 6:30-7:30pm--  "Spring Native Wildflowers," with guest speaker Janet Manning.  Janet is the  Director of the Corneille Bryan Native Garden at Lake Junaluska,NC.  


Saturday, April 14th, Field Trip, 1:00-3:00pm -- "Discovering Native Wildflowers,"  Field Trip to the Corneille Bryan Native Garden, Lake Junaluska.  Location: Lake Junaluska,  along the rose garden, turn into  Stuart Circle and park at the end of the street.  Meet with Janet at the entrance to the native garden at 1:00pm.


Saturday,April 28th, Workshop from 9:00am-Noon-- "Birdwatching for Beginners" with GSMAS Board Member Larry Thompson at the Balsam Mountain Inn, Balsam,NC.    Learn the 10 helpful hints for beginning birders!  Learn how to identify birds, birding ethics,  how to find birds and so much more. Guided walk after lunch on the Balsam grounds, approximately 1:00-2:00pm.  Cost is $25.00.  Please RSVP Larry at 828-452-5414 to reserve your space/lunch option.   Please bring a notebook, pen and walking gear.

The GSMAS meets the second Tuesday of the month, April through October, from 6:30-7:30pm at their new location, Paul Kern Youth Center at Lake Junaluska, NC.  Members and non-members alike are welcome to come early and enjoy some birding right from the Youth Center porch, or take a walk  along the lake.
